Welcome to the personal site of Philip Kinchington.

I was an engineer, but I’m now chasing a dream of working in Japan for a few years as part of a bigger plan to move into teaching.

Previously I spent 30+ years working and studying in the field of Instrumentation and Control Engineering. When the company I had been working at for over 10 years was permanently closed during the 2020 pandemic, I took the opportunity to reassess everything. I decided that I’d got everything out of engineering that I felt I needed to, and that it was time to try something different.

My plan is to try and move into teaching in some capacity. I am hoping to be able to live and work in Japan for a couple of years as an Assistant Language Teacher (ALT) or similar, in order to get some experience to help with applications for teaching positions when I return. Hopefully I can achieve this through the JET Program or with one of the agencies that provide similar positions within the Japanese Education System.

I have been studying Japanese for a few years now off and on. But I’m still at a fairly basic level.
